Morning Meditation Ritual

One of the most important principals of meditation is the letting go of expectations and analysis of your meditation.  All meditation is beneficial. There are however some things you can do to prepare for meditation that can make it more comfortable, effective and increase the physical benefits of your practice.
If you experience stiffness in your joints or if your neck is stiff from sleep, while you lay in bed, check in with yourself, see how your body feels.  There are some simple yoga stretches, that are gentle and can be done before you rise. While doing these exercises think about what you would like the day to bring and what you would like to bring to the day.

There are some basics steps you can take to prepare for meditation that can increase the physical benefits of your practice as well as allow an easier flow of energy so that you may experience higher states of consciousness and/or a deeper meditation.

  1. It is best to meditate in the morning.
  2. Empty your bladder and bowels first thing in the morning to enjoy meditation more.  Eliminating toxins first thing clears the way for kundalini energy to flow up the spine through each chakra as you are sitting in meditation or practicing yoga.
  3. Clean your mouth, floss, scrape your tongue and brush your teeth to remove all of the toxins - the bacteria that sits on the tongue.  This will prevent your swallowing the germs.
  4. If you shower before meditating, include cleansing your nasal passages .Use a gentle formula in a Netti pot (or small nasal spray/squeeze bottle). This aids in removing mucus and build up from the sinus and nostrils and helps to keep the nasal area clear for doing pranayama (breathing exercises) and is an essential prerequisite for meditation, too. Doing this before yoga and meditation ensures the desired condition for regulating healthy breath flow, and stimulation of the pituitary gland in the brain.  This awakens the energy center behind the forehead, the chakra that opens the way for higher states of consciousness and deeper meditation.
  5. Self Massage with almond oil scented or infused with dosha specific or appealing essential oils aids the circulation by stimulating the blood and muscles.  This oil will give protection to the skin from the cold as well as nourish the body, soften the skin and awaken the senses.
  6. Shower using cold water. The oil massage will help     protect your body from the cold but to avoid shocking your system, start slowly, alternating warm and cold water (hydrotherapy)while rubbing your body to stimulate the skin and nerves as you work your way to a thorough cold rinse.  Include rinsing under the arms, major nerve and lymphatic centers, and inner thighs, as well as the bottom of your feet maximizes the benefits of this therapy.  You don't need to soak the crown of your head with cold water -but do rinse your hair to enjoy extra shine!
  7. Dry yourself vigorously with a cotton towel.  You can do this with a towel that is a little rough to the touch rather than a very soft one to increase circulation.
  8. Dress in loose fitting, comfortable clothing.
  9. Write your goals down on a piece of paper.
  10. Sit comfortably and view your goals.
  11. Then close your eyes.

Now you are ready to meditate.
